One of the biggest challenges of using your car in winter is removing ice from the windshield every morning. You might hate standing outside on a frosty morning to scrape the ice covering your car. But, it is a necessity if you want to drive safely. Thankfully, there are some easy ways to de-ice the windshields quickly without causing you frostbite.Â
Use a Homemade De-Icing Spray
Although you have store-bought de-icing sprays that come handy for the purpose, it is always better to prepare this solution at home. A homemade solution isn't rough on the glass, and it doesn't have any harmful chemicals that can damage the windshield. Â
You can prepare a batch of this spray in advance and fill it in spray bottles for quick use every morning. Also, store a spray bottle of the de-icing solution inside your car when driving away from home. If you want to make this solution at home, here are two simple methods to do so:
Mix water and isopropyl alcohol in a ratio of 1:3 to prepare a safe de-icing solution. Since this solution has its freezing point at five degrees, it works faster to remove the ice.Â
You can make a spray by mixing two to three scoops of road salt with a bottle full of water. This solution also has a very low freezing point making it effective for de-icing.
Apply the Solution Smoothly
Once you have the de-icing spray, apply it properly every time you want to remove ice from the windshield. Start the engine of your car to warm it up from the inside to melt the ice.Â
Now, spray the de-icing solution on the ice from the outside and let it rest as such for some minutes. When the ice gets loose, use a plastic scraper, squeegee or a soft-bristle brush to chip off the residues of melting ice.Â
Follow Caution When De-Icing
If you follow the right procedure, you can quickly de-ice the windshield of your car. Firstly, apply the solution to the windshield. Turn the heater to defrost, but do not crank it to full heat in one go. Inspect the tailpipes for any blockage due to the melting of ice that can cause the release of carbon monoxide inside the vehicle. Avoid detergent or vinegar-based solutions that can chip off car wax along with ice.
Do Not Ignore Windows and Mirrors
Windshields are not the only glass covered by ice. The mirrors and windows can also get icy and hinder your visibility levels when driving. Remember, it can be dangerous to drive your vehicle in winter without proper visibility in all directions.Â
Hence, you need every glass clear before driving. When de-icing the windshield, follow the same process for windows and mirrors as well to ensure the complete safety of your vehicle and passengers. Â
It may not be possible to avoid icy windshields and other glass during winter nights. But, with these steps, you can get rid of this ice quickly and adequately. If you find any damage due to ice, take your vehicle to the nearest mechanic without delay.
